ZIPPER BAG
Each child should have brought laptop zipper bag. This bag will be sent home each night and will contain their agenda, homework, completed work, newsletters, and permission forms. Please check your child’s bag every night and send it back to school the following day. This will help students keep track of their work.
Agenda
This year Grade 2's have an agenda. It will be used for keeping track of class and school events, goal setting, and communicating with parents. Please take a look at your child’s agenda every night, sign it, and send it back to school the following day. Some things to watch for: An E, G, S, or N reflecting their self-assessment for how well they met their goal and a "smiley" face indicating what kind of day they had. Feel free to leave notes in the agenda or to attach a note.
Tests
There will be various tests throughout the year. You will be informed at least a week in advance of any upcoming tests and what content should be reviewed at home. When a test is written, the score will be written on a record sheet and placed in the your child's home folder. Please review the tests, sign the record sheet, and return the sheet to school. Tests can stay at home.
Spelling Tests
Spelling words this year will be a combination of word families, high frequency words, and content words. Spelling homework will be sent home on Monday and should return on Friday. Tests will be written on Fridays, unless it is a very short week. (In this case, students will be informed and it will be noted here on the website.) Remember good spellers make good writers!
Bible Memory Verses
Students will be learning a new Bible verse about every two weeks. Please post the verse in a highly visible place (e.g. on the fridge or the back of a car seat) and encourage your child to read it every time he or she sees it. They will be quizzed on the Bible verses about every other week, usually on a Wednesday.
HOME READING
Students will be assigned reading to complete at home. This will hopefully begin at the beginning of October.

RAZ KIDS
Each grade two student has a RAZ account for reading practice. Log-in information will be sent home on the night of parent orientation. Students should be reading approximately 20 minutes/night. Any books read on RAZ do not need to be logged. Any books read from home, the library, or school should be logged for the purposes of student-teacher conferencing.

Wednesday - Read a letter from a parent about how special the student is.
Thursday - Show and tell. (No more than 3 things.)
Friday - Give out candy for quiz and receive a poster from classmates.
See the handouts section for the student schedule. (Will be posted shortly.)

Volunteering
The best classrooms are those where parents are actively involved. If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom, please let me know. All volunteers need to have a valid police check including vulnerable sector screening. Possible areas where your help would be much appreciated include the following: yard duties, lunch room help, chapels, marking, reading buddies, bulletin boards, photocopying, laminating, preparing classroom materials, student support, book orders, and special activities.
Health Information
We have nut allergies in our school. Please make sure that food sent to school is nut free.
As well, if your child must have medication taken at school, you need to fill out an Authorization to Administer Medication Form before it can be administered.

SNACK/Lunch
We will be eating snack and lunch in the classroom this year. We don't have a microwave. Please send any hot food in a thermos. We will be eating snack at 10:25 am and lunch at 12:55 pm. We are recommending that students eat the meal (i.e. sandwich, wrap, pasta in a thermos, etc.) at snack time so they have the energy to get through the day. Please ensure your child has enough healthy food to get through the day. Crackers and cheese, fruit, yogurt, and carrot sticks are a few snack ideas.
Helping Others
Here is a list of things you can send to school with your child instead of throwing out. They will be put to good use :)
As well, the church has a non-perishable food cupboard that is used to help those in need within the community. On dress down days students can either bring $1.00 or a canned good. Monies raised will be donated to Haiti. The canned goods get added to the church's community food cupboard.
- milk bags
- used batteries
- Campbell's soup labels
- Canadian Tire money

BEHAVIOUR CHART
There is a chart on the back of the classroom door that holds a peg for each of the students in grade two. The colours are arranged in the following order from top to bottom: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red. Every day, students start on green. As they work hard and help one another, they can earn their way up to blue, purple, and then pink. This includes things like helping to clean up other people's messes, staying on task with no reminders from the teacher, sharing with someone in need, etc. If it's going over and above CBA expectations or ties in with the character quality for that month, they will also receive a Caught You Caring. The opposite is also true. If they are disruptive or unkind, they have to move their peg down. At the end of the day, each student records what colour they finish on. This can be a great tool to discuss what their day was like and help them to goal set for the next day. My hope is that it will help students to take ownership for their own behaviour and encourage them to not just do the right thing but to be the hands and feet of Jesus to those around them.

CLASS DOJO
The grade twos have been registered with Class Dojo. It's a place where both I and the students can post comments and/or pictures of what's happening in the classroom. I hope to also use it for reminders or to send notes home. A log-in paper will be sent home the first week of school with further details.
